Our fish are precious. Over the centuries, their abundance has saved many a Norwegian’s life along our long, remote coastline. We realised though, 25 years ago, that we needed to change how we looked after our fish.
We hadn’t looked after stocks and now we risked the abundant inheritance our parents and grandparents had passed down to us. The fish had saved us time and again – now it was our turn to save them.
Of course, in saving them, we were also saving ourselves. The seafood industry is one of our main exports as well as being vital to sustain our settlements and people all along the Norwegian coast. It provides jobs in fishing and aquaculture, helps to feed our people, and has widespread effects on Norwegian trade and industry.
