Norway is the second largest exporter of seafood in the world. But what makes Norwegian seafood so popular? We believe it’s a dedication to superior quality, the thorough controls we’ve put in place throughout the food chain, and our pioneering attitude to sustainability. The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) was founded in 1991 by the Ministry of Fisheries with the aim of communicating these strengths to the world.
The NSC is based in Tromsø, which is 600 km north of the Arctic Circle. We also have branches in 12 major seafood markets. We are financed by the Norwegian seafood industry through fees levied on all seafood exports.
The NSC is a public company owned by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs. Our role is to develop a multitude of activities each year, including distributing information, conducting studies, monitoring markets and advertising. We collaborate with the industry to promote Norwegian seafood overseas, while researching and developing insight and new routes to market. The NSC constantly monitor and manage the reputation of Norwegian seafood through marketing and public relations.
We know how good Norwegian seafood is and we’re dedicated to increasing demand for it around the world. We often support our exporters’ own sales efforts, and get involved in joint market activities with partners in the industry. Each year, we implement around 500 marketing projects in 25 different countries.
We continually monitor trends and developments in both the Norwegian seafood industry and the global market. We distribute statistics on a monthly basis and hold the latest data on import quotas, tariff rates and trade conditions, so that we can offer advice to exporters of Norwegian seafood. We also share this market information with the Norwegian seafood industry and the Norwegian authorities in order to inform their decision-making processes.
Telling the world
We want everyone to know about Norwegian seafood and the important role it plays in our culture, so we actively plan, fund and deliver corporate communications, press trips and PR activities. We are always on-hand to contribute to debates with accurate and up-to-date information.
Norway exports to more than 140 countries around the world. To increase demand for our seafood and to boost its reputation, the NSC develops hundreds of promotional campaigns in key markets. All activities are based on the NORGE designation of origin – the guarantee that your fish is from Norway’s cold, clear waters. In addition, NORGE represents our commitment to sustainability and enables us to develop trade policies that lead the way for the rest of the world.
